Halogen downlights effectively, are a whole bunch of holes in your ceiling, because most downlights have gaps around the light globe or fixture. Those gaps allow draughts to occur, in to or out of the room. In winter, the warmest air at the top of the room escapes through those gaps, and cold air can fall into your rooms. In summer, the superhot air in the ceiling or roof cavity expands and creeps into the room through these same downlight openings. A downlight cover is a cheap, safe, simple and effective way to seal the gaps of downlights. Installed from below, this Basic Mitt downlight cover is simply inserted through the ceiling cut-out of each downlight, and located to sit over the downlight in the ceiling space. The Basic Mitt is an insulation product, soft and bendable, and feels like rubber to touch. It is extremely fire resisitant, able to withstand the high temperatures that a typical halogen (or any) globe produces. The heat emitted by the globe is allowed to escape through the mitt via a small aperture at the very top

The mitt material is known as intumescent. An intumescent is a substance which swells as a result of heat exposure, thus increasing in volume, and decreasing in density. Just like ceiling insulation 'batts', these mitts have a certified 'R-rating' against fire. The Basic Mitt serves also to keep any ceiling insualtion from contacting the heated light, thus severely reducing any resultant fire risk
